Guided Hiking - the experience

Hiking with a guide is a unique and eye opening experience for many. A lot of people seem to think of being guided as something that is not for them. That the experience of hiking is merely walking to a place in the backcountry. While this may be true to some extent, most people will miss out on much of the experience available to them while on their journey. There is so much more to engage with on a hike than just getting from A to B and back again. This engagement will feel more fulfilling and leaves one with more understanding and respect for the land.

Ryan’s Background

Ryan has been exploring the mountains around southeast BC since before he could walk (taking advantage of riding in either of his parents backpacks). At a young age, his parents and grandparents would take him and his brother out around the region on a regular basis for hiking, skiing and fishing adventures. Ryan was fortunate to have several outdoor mentors and friends early on and into adulthood. This early time in the mountains influenced how Ryan would spend time throughout his life.

Ryan’s career in professional guiding started in 2008 with the first course to becoming a guide, the Assistant Hiking Guide certification through the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides. Since becoming fully certified, Ryan has mostly guided for companies such as Canadian Mountain Holidays and Assiniboine Lodge. Working with these companies, Ryan is able to work alongside, learning and being mentored by, some the most respected and experienced guides alive in Canada today. He averages 50 days per summer working in the field, not to mention many more days for personal satisfaction!
